BETA ALANINE

What Is It?

Beta Alanine is a non-essential amino acid and is the only naturally occurring beta-amino acid. Your best bet for ingesting it is via dipeptides: carnosine, anserine and balenine. Yes, that all sounds confusing, we know. Simply, these are naturally found in food products such as chicken, beef, pork and fish. Obviously, it is also available as a direct supplement.

Why It’s Cool

It has many, and significant, benefits to the bodybuilder and athlete that you might be. These include boosting muscular strength and power, increasing muscle mass, boosting anaerobic endurance, increasing aerobic endurance, and increasing exercise capacity allowing you to train harder and longer to get the most out of your body.

Beta Alanine becomes your best buddy by helping a great deal with the synthesis of carnosine, which is found predominantly in Type 2 muscle fibres. These fibres are primarily utilised during high intensity workouts and are the most responsive to muscular growth. Carnosine allows our muscles to perform optimally by stabilising pH levels, letting them function normally and to their full capacity, meaning increased anaerobic capacity and decreased fatigue levels can result, as well an increased heart-rate threshold during exercise.

Beta Alanine may be a relatively invisible foot soldier in the fight for the perfect body but it’s an important one.
AGMATINE SULPHATE

What Is It?

Agmatine is a naturally created substance derived from the chemical arginine. It is a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator. Basically this means it’s a fantastic communicator that sends messages across neurons so they can do their jobs effectively. Think of it as a team manager, the highly competent sort not the one that just organises the after-game drinks session. Natural sources include beef, fish, bananas, avocados, mushrooms, chocolate and soy sauce to name a few. It’s quite prevalent and is also widely distributed throughout the body in the stomach, aorta, intestines, spleen, lungs, adrenal gland, kidney, liver, skeletal muscles, testes and brain. So, like a busy mother, it’s everywhere keeping on top of many things.

Why It’s Cool

Principally, Agmatine comes into its own when fighting pain, which significantly helps an athlete when recuperating from injury or even just recovering after a workout. Agmatine is helpful in relieving anxiety and producing antidepressant effects by controlling cortisol levels and modulating nitric oxide. It also aids in skeletal muscle glucose uptake.

ARGININE ALPHA-KETOGLUTARATE (AAKG)

What Is It?

Arginine is an essential amino acid which can be found in the diet besides supplementation.

Why It’s Cool

The most attractive benefit that AAKG has is to directly produce nitric oxide, which in turn causes one’s blood vessels to open wider, improving blood flow. This has a ‘flow’ on effect (yes, you saw what we did there) of allowing more blood to reach muscles and tissues, providing larger amounts of carbohydrates, proteins and muscle building hormones. It does all this without raising blood pressure too, so how about that. A knee-slapping success if ever there was one. Specifically, this enables athletes to exercise longer with less pain and stiffness.

L-arginine can also stimulate the release of growth hormone and insulin, as well as help the liver break down by-products of muscle exercise such as ammonia.
CAFFEINE ANHYDROUS

What Is It?

A fancy-pants way of saying dehydrated caffeine. As we all know, caffeine, or Superman, is our very own hero when it comes to early mornings or forced late nights. As a species we can’t seem to get enough of coffee but caffeine anhydrous is a slightly different beast.

Why It’s Cool

By depriving the caffeine of water, we get a far more concentrated dose of the magical stimulant, increasing the potency.

Not only does caffeine prevent us from zombifying, it is also used to improve physical strength and endurance. Classified as a nootropic (brain food), it sensitises neurons and provides mental stimulation to get the brain firing out all the right signals.

It’s useful for extended, exhaustive exercise and time-trial performance, for high intensity exercise such as soccer or rugby, increased anaerobic capacity such as in running and rowing, increased power input such as in sprinting and weight-lifting, and improvements in aerobic exercise such as long-distance cycling.

You knew it was good, but did you know it was that good?
PREBIOTIC FIBRE (INULIN)

What Is It?

Inulin is a starchy substance found in many fruits, vegetables and herbs. When used as an extract, it is sourced from chicory root.

Why It’s Cool

Inulin is one of those people that is always there to lend a helping hand. In this case, it supports the growth of ‘friendly’ bacteria that is associated with improving bowel function and general health. So no need to worry about constipation or, errr, the opposite which we don’t speak about.

Inulin decreases the body’s ability to make certain kinds of fats, which can aid in weight loss.
AMP CITRATE

What Is It?

AMP can be naturally found as part of the herbal extract pouching tea (Chinese white tea) and can also be found in the essential oils of a flower named Coreopsis tinctoria (calliopsis).

Essentially, AMP is a legal and safe alternative to the banned substance DMAA, with which it shares similar properties.

Why It’s Cool

DMAA was banned due to adverse side effects which made it dangerous for the heart and cardiovascular system. AMP is a strong central nervous system stimulant and doesn’t come with the same dangers but has the same benefits as DMAA including increased energy, heightened mental focus and improved metabolism.

METHYL SYNEPHRINE (OXILOFRINE)

What Is It?

Found in many species of plants, it is better known as ‘bitter orange’ as that is where the majority of synephrine is now sourced.

Why It’s Cool

It’s quite a cheeky fat burner that has the special ability to increase both energy and metabolic rate without increasing heart rate or blood pressure. Like one of those kids who always cheated on math tests and never got caught, synephrine knows how to work the system that is our body, easily breaking down fat for use as energy.
3,3’-DIINDOLYLMETHANE (DIM)

What Is It?

DIM is found naturally in members of the brassica family. No, they’re not dinosaurs, although that would be exciting. They’re vegetables such as broccoli, kale and cauliflower.

Why It’s Cool

Popular for all the bodybuilders in the house, DIM is a very effective regulator of estrogen, making sure the pesky overall effects of estrogen in the body are minimised. It also inhibits the gain of fat, even in a high calorie diet, and has the added general health bonus of being anti-carcinogenic, just in case it wasn’t impressive enough already.
CO-ENZYME Q10 (UBIDECARENONE)

What Is It?

COQ10 is a molecule produced in the body that aids the mitochondria of the cells during energy production.

Why It’s Cool

Let’s go with a military analogy here. Your body’s cells are the soldiers. COQ10 is the ammunition they use to produce the energy you need for growth, repair and maintenance. This all aids in boosting energy, speeding up recovery and reducing the extent of muscle damage during exercise. All the while, you can keep shooting away at your training goals, hitting your targets, accomplishing your mission. You get the drift.
